DESIGN: No Man Left Behind
VETERAN:
 John Vandermeulen
BRANCH: U.S. Army
DESIGNER: Emily Watz Bode
PROJECT: 2015 HERO[series]

While in Vietnam, John Vandermeulen learned the importance of never leaving any man behind. The Huey helicopter is symbolic of their role in getting so many soldiers out alive while the ants represent the community of men who were dedicated to a mission larger than themselves.

His design juxtaposes the toughness of war in the Vietnam jungle with a softness that comes from his love of nature. As one of many Veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange, John continues to battle multiple health issues. Emily wanted to be sure to share his story through a depiction of how the cycle of life can be both beautiful and gradually crippling.

No matter the situation or its circumstances, their design is a reminder that we are all in this together.
